⛔️ Colic ⛔️
There are over 70 different causes of colic (abdominal pain) in horses. The most common include high grain-based diets/low forage diets, abrupt change in feed and stress.
Most horses will suffer from colic sometime during their life and many cases go unseen and resolve without treatment.
All cases of colic cause signs of abdominal pain that may range from mild (pawing at the ground, looking at abdomen) to severe (lying down, rolling, uncontrollable pain). 90% of cases will respond to medical treatment including pain relief, fluids and electrolytes administered by a stomach tube and/or intravenously. 10% of cases require surgery.
The best management system to prevent colic includes consistent, good quality high fibre diet, access to clean water, regular undisrupted feed program, regular worming and teeth maintenance.
